island update

I have so many good "blog"intentions that I struggle getting to. Check out these photos took last JANUARY (hello.) at Steve Holdaway’s workshop, as he was building four custom scrapbook islands based on the one he designed for me. Visiting him was really fun–he gets as animated about finding cool wood as I do finding cool paper. Some the wood used was from a log pulled out of the bottom of a lake somewhere in the east (I can’t remember all the details right now) but he showed us the beautiful grain in it. Anyway, it smelled simply wonderful (I love the wood aisle at Home Depot too) and to see his craftsmanship up close — way cool.

Anyway, here’s Stacy with her island — love the turquoise cups!

And this is Chris, who lives just a couple hours south of me. She drove up to pick up her island and I met her at the Holdaway’s house (which btw, is where the harvest fair was the other weekend — and where the American Gothic pic was taken. It’s like a little slice of Americana!!) I decided everyone who ordered an island, needed an island "warming" gift, so I gave them each 50 of those really sturdy hanging folders that hold 12×12 paper. Steve fits the two bottom drawers with hardware to support these files.

I have one other "island" picture that I’m going to see if I can find. It now lives in Colorado I think, and Steve and his wife Nancy actually delivered it — on their way to see family (this all happened back in the Spring btw)

I’ve had a few "island" questions, since Wendy’s book came out — if you are interested, or just have questions about price, construction etc.. just email Steve — he says he may consider building another batch of 4 or so.

    have a wonderderful holiday, stacy…

  83. So glad to see you back! What fun pictures!

  84. OK…too weird, this is one of those tender mercies you’ve talked about….only for me. I only check in once in awhile, and have done nothing but think of you since reading the last few posts. You are continually in my prayers and more recently a trip to the temple on your behalf. My heart has hurt, because I know what a truly genuine person you are…..thinking of you and hope things are on the rise. You don’t need to post this, just wanted to let you know you are heavily in my thoughts.
On a brighter note… worktable is FINALLY upstairs!Like just in the last week. I measured a few things wrong with the rest of the office and so my desk is out a bit far, and it’s a bit tight, but i love it all. i just need to clear out the costco 8foot table and replace with bookcases and I’m moved in. My oldest son who helped move the table, has affectionately been calling the table the “altar” because he was so taken when i turned the light portion of it on….it just made him laugh, and now the whole family is calling it mom’s “altar”….it’s a good thing, I love it and all that it stands for, thankyou again for the connection to be able to have it built!!!
    Chris Winterbottom

  85. :O) Happy pictures – happy times. Hope you are smiling today.

  86. Glad you’re back….:-)!

  87. Hi Stacy,
What an awesome work table! It was nice to see your smiling face again. I took your class at the very first CKU in Provo and repeated it again the next year in Stamford. It’s still the best class I’ve ever taken to help me understand design principles. I also like Simple Scrapbooks Magazine best, as it suits my style. So many layouts in other magazines and in my local stores have so much product on them, you have to search for the photos. I notice you are moderating your blog now, and I think that’s wise. I continue to admire you and look forward to the time that your words will once again accompany your pictures. Peace to you and your family.

  88. having a work surface like that would be such a dream!

  89. Meredith Shepherd says:

Could your woodworker friend make some moola off selling the plans for the table – along with step by step photos? I bet there are a lot of us who are handy (aka – have handy hubby connections)who might attempt a similar project. Although – I’m sure it wouldn’t turn out as well as having a master craftsman – it could be another alternative to making them himself.
    Keep us posted.

  90. This island is amazing!!! I’m so jealous. I think I need to figure out how much I need to save to get one for myself.

  91. When you had this island on your blog before it inspired me to talk my hubby into making me an island work area. We had wood bookshelves that my hubby made the kids 20 years ago that were just sitting in their rooms (they no longer live at home). So we cut them in half, added a piece of wood to hold the two halves together and added a 2ft x 6 ft piece of cheap plywood and covered it with leftover laminate flooring for the top! You can see it on my blog I am very proud of it !!
