The Power of Moms: A Giveway

Several months ago, my sister Darci told me about a cool group she belonged to in her neighborhood. Similar to book club, she gathers with other moms once a month to discuss, not books, but motherhood! What an awesome concept right? Moms forming their own support group, with dessert (of course!)

“But, how do you know what to discuss?” I asked

Just log onto The Power of Moms website (powerofmoms.com) and you’ll totally get it, she said. So I did, and I do. In fact, I am starting my own group, called a “learning circle” with the moms on my street (we are the Mill River Moms) and I think it’s going to be so much fun—a reason to get together, nothing to buy, a monthly “power” to discuss and plenty of understanding ears and as previously mentioned, dessert! What could be better? Heads Up: IF you are interested in starting your own Learning Circle and you register by October 1st, you can receive all of the materials and help you need for just $18 (rather than $25.)

All of this brings me to the fact, that there is an upcoming Power of Moms one-day retreat in Spokane and I’ve been given the opportunity to spread the word and save one of you some money on registration. Obviously, this is giveaway is for one of my more local readers, but the website Power of Moms is for anyone who cares about the skills of nurturing and mothering and the importance of raising great kids in what can be a very scary world.

The Spokane Retreat is scheduled for Saturday, October 13th from 9:00am to 5:00pm and it includes lunch!

In the spirit of September’s Power of the Month (organization), here is a Mom Tip from Me: Set up a little tray or catch all in a kitchen drawer and label it “Game Parts and Pieces.” When you find one of those little bones from the game Operation or a LIFE car or a random dice, drop it there. The next time the game comes out, you know exactly where to look for missing pieces! Because you really do feel powerful when a child asks, “Mom, we’re missing the candlestick for Clue, do you know where it is? And you say, “Yes I do!”

  1. Clutter is overhwleming and it’s nice to pair down to “less is more” but sometimes more is better. For example I have scissors in a few places in the house: kitchen drawer, office, downstairs where the deepfreeze and extra food is kept. This makes things more convienent to grab and to put away. Multi surface and toilet cleaner in each bathroom. Hand lotion in the bathroom, under kitchen sink and my nighstand.

    • Waaahhh! Thank you for posting that. We woke up late and I was stressed trying to get everyone ready in time for the school buses. I needed to remember all these things today!

  3. My organizational tip is to keep things stored where you use them. Sounds obvious right? But you’d be surprised how much running up and down the stairs you do and how many miles you walk in your own house (which counts towards your workout! but still…) So now we have extra underwear in a basket under the bathroom sink, a drawer with all the snack bags right next to the pantry where the snacks are kept, lunchboxes and supplies for love notes in the cupboard near the counter where I make the lunches, hooks by the front door for the backpacks, a basket for books near the comfy couch where we read, etc etc Take a look around your house and see what you can move around to make things easier for everyone.

  4. Can’t make it out West, although I’d love to combine a Power of Moms retreat with a visit to my sister in law in Spokane!

    My tip is to give everyone a color of bath towel, that is their towel for the week. (Kids get one, grown ups get two) Then once a week I wash the load of towels. I was doing 4+ loads of towels a week between bath & kitchen towels until my 2nd baby and knew I had to find some time saving spots in our lives to function. If I could just find a way to cut down on the kitchen towels next!

  5. I live too far to come to the retreat, but I love organizing tips. Mine is to set up a binder, along with tabs for each child, their school, and their respective “extra curriculars”. Behind each section, I 3-hole punch and then place any newsletters/schedules/call-sheets for that particular child. That way, I always know where to find the info, and they do, too. I place the binder in a basket near my kids’ cubbies–they know where to put any papers for mom, and I have a place to put the papers for future reference (or toss what is not needed).

  6. Camping in the Great Smokies the weekend of the retreat, so won’t throw my comment in the ring to be picked, but did want to share a tip I’ve just started using…To make school lunch making easier, I grab a box of snack size plastic bags and the various goodies I put in them to toss into the lunch box along with the kids’ sandwches. I make a bag for each day of the week of each snack the kids like (pre-sliced apples, baby carrots, grapes, cookies, animal crackers, etc.) I then place all the bags of fridge snacks in the veggie or fruit fridge bin and the dry goods snacks in a basket in the pantry. I do all this on the weekend after grocery shopping. Each weekday morning, all I have to actually prepare is each child’s sandwich, and then just toss in the snack bag(s) I know they like. Instant healthy and yummy lunch!!

  7. I’d love to go to the retreat! My tip is to leave baskets near the stairs. As you find things that need to go up or downstiars, just put them in the basket so you can carry it up next time you go up!
