I watched via Amazon Prime—over two evenings—so I could digest and think. As I watched I kept thinking of an IG meme I had seen earlier that said, “I understand that I don’t understand!” and honestly, I’m not sure I want to understand, because what has played out in our country is ugly and gut wrenching.

If you watch the documentary above, you will learn that Loki Mulholland descends from slave holders. This is NOT a very happy thing to discover in your family history, but … he tells of how one person can begin to redeem a family and turn the story around. In Loki’s case, this person is his mother, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland. Joan became an ardent civil rights activist and Freedom Rider. This is her story. I will be reading it to Addie.

Hidden Biases of Good People

This is the kind of book I LOVE. I don’t have to read it front to back and I get to better understand the genesis of biases via research that has been conducted and analyzed for years. This book does not directly address the current discussion of race prejudice, discrimination and injustice, but it is helping me open up to WHY these challenges arise and how I can intentionally outsmart them in my own mind and life.

Rich Benjamin’s presentation struck a personal chord because I live just 20 minutes from one of the three communities he visited during his two year road trip to experience and document white suburbia. This is very eye-opening! Note: Rich has authored a book titled Searching For Whitopia
